How long does it take to self-publish a print book?

Writing takes as long as it takes. From finished manuscript to a book for sale, here's a realistic timeline, and where most first-timers lose weeks without expecting it.

Quick answer

From finished, edited manuscript to a print book for sale usually takes 2 to 6 weeks: about a week or more for formatting and cover (several weeks with freelancers), a few days per printer review, about a week for a printed proof to arrive, then about 3 business days for KDP to go live. Each rejection adds days.

Rough guides from common author experience; KDP's own help says books are usually live within about 3 business days. Freelancer and package timings vary; BookBaby, for example, says to allow several weeks.

Where the time really goes

Waiting on other people

With freelancers, most of the time isn't work, it's waiting: for a reply, for a draft, for a revision. Each round trip is often days.

Rejections

Every rejected upload means fixing, re-uploading and a new review. Two or three rounds can add weeks. SparkPrep's founder went through 18 with his own book.

Late changes

A change after the cover is done (new chapter, bigger font, different paper) changes the page count, which changes the spine, which means rebuilding the cover. Lock the manuscript before formatting.

How to save weeks

  1. Finish editing before formatting.
  2. Decide printer, trim and paper on day one.
  3. Format the interior before the cover, so the page count is final.
  4. Preflight before every upload, so the first review passes.
  5. Order the proof as soon as the files are accepted, and plan your launch date after it arrives.

Planning a launch date? Count back: proof arrival plus a week of buffer, then 3 business days for KDP. Put the first upload at least 3 weeks before launch.
